Welcome to the Touraneena Community

Touraneena is situated in one of the most scenic areas in all of Ireland. Nestling between the Knockmealdown Monavullagh and Comeragh Mountains and a little north of the Drum Hills, Touraneena is half way between the towns of Dungarvan (Co. Waterford) and Clonmel (Co. Tipperary). The village of Touraneena is situated about one mile off the main Dungarvan/Clonmel road. The centre of the village has a Roman Catholic Church, a National School, Shop, Post Office, two public houses, a pre-school and a Community Centre. The local G.A.A. Field is a short distance outside the village. Touraneena is very proud of its sporting hero’s, past and present. In times past, people like Tomás O’Flynn (long distance running), Fr. Jim Kiely O.S.A., Paddy Hearne, Paddy Tyres and Tom Condon (Gaelic Football), Declan Fitzpatrick and John Dalton (Hurling) have all excelled in their chosen sports. In more recent times some outstanding sporting prospects have put Touraneena on the sporting map once again. Denis Coffey (hurling), David McCarthy (Athletics), Seamus Power (Golf), Tristan Hickey, Niamh Coffey, Julie Skehan and Gemma Cliffe (Racquetball) and Olivia Condon (Ladies Football) amongst many others have brought great pride and joy to the parish and surrounding areas. Touraneena is also well known for producing some of the finest musicians and dancers from any part of Ireland. The name of Sliabh gCua is known far and wide in set dancing circles for winning many County, Provincial and All-Ireland titles at Adult and Junior Level. The area has also produced some fine Irish Dancers over the years. In recent years, Deirdre and Sinead Kiely, Chloe Lawlor as well as Róisín and Shauna Walsh have won many top honours for their talents. The Touranena area is also known for its poets, scholars, musicians & hospitality. The County Clare Scholar and Poet Donnacha Ruadh MacConmara who lived and worked in the area for some time in the 1840’s is believed to have some up with the phrase “Buadh an Leinn, Buadh na Feile agus Buadh na Filleachta”. The Touraneena area is also known as Sliabh gCua, but the Sliabh gCua name does not apply solely to the Touraneena area. A large area of West Waterford and South Tipperary could be described as been in Sliabh gCua. Touraneena was in the centre of this area and the Sliabh gCua name is now only used in the Touraneena area. Within a short distance of Touraneena is a number of places for visitors to see. The Nire Valley is a short distance away as is the Comeragh Drive. The heritage town of Lismore is not very far away as is the Cistercian Abbey and Grotto at Mount Melleray. A number of Beaches and Golf Courses are to be found within a few minutes drive of leaving Touraneena. Within the parish can be found the burial grounds at Knockboy where St. Seskinane’s Church now stands (in ruins) which replaced a much earlier church of which parts of which may be found with careful examinations of the grounds. Over all but one of the lentils of the church, can be found some Ogham stones that date back to the fourth to eight centuries.
